\u201cIt is a great profession. There is the fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer\u2019s high privilege.<\/em><\/p>\n

The great liability of the engineer compared to men of other professions is that his works are out in the open where all can see them. His acts, step by step, are in hard substance. He cannot bury his mistakes in the grave like the doctors. He cannot argue them into thin air or blame the judge like the lawyers. He cannot, like the architects, cover his failures with trees and vines. He cannot, like the politicians, screen his shortcomings by blaming his opponents and hope the people will forget. The engineer simply cannot deny he did it. If his works do not work, he is damned\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

On the other hand, unlike the doctor his is not a life among the weak. Unlike the soldier, destruction is not his purpose. Unlike the lawyer, quarrels are not his daily bread. To the engineer falls the job of clothing the bare bones of science with life, comfort, and hope. No doubt as years go by the people forget which engineer did it, even if they ever knew. Or some politician puts his name on it. Or they credit it to some promoter who used other people\u2019s money . . . But the engineer himself looks back at the unending stream of goodness which flows from his successes with satisfactions that few professions may know. And the verdict of his fellow professionals is all the accolade he wants.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Apoi, se va trece la realizarea in piatr\u0103, metal sau energie. Acesta poate fi privilegiul unic al inginerului.<\/p>

Marea responsabilitate a Inginerului, in compara\u0163ie cu celelalte profesii, este aceea c\u0103 lucr\u0103rile sale sunt vizibile la tot pasul. El nu poate \u00eengropa gre\u015felile \u00een morm\u00e2nt, precum doctorii. El nu poate argumenta, doar din vorbe, precum judec\u0103torii \u015fi avoca\u0163ii. El nu poate, la fel ca arhitec\u0163ii, s\u0103-\u015fi acopere e\u015fecurile cu pomi sau vi\u0163\u0103 de vie. El nu poate, la fel ca politicienii, s\u0103 pun\u0103 toate neajunsurile sale pe seama adversarilor, sper\u00e2nd c\u0103 oamenii vor uita.<\/p>

Un inginer, pur \u015fi simplu, nu poate nega ceea ce a f\u0103cut; \u00een cazul \u00een care lucr\u0103rile sale nu func\u0163ioneaz\u0103, el este responsabil. Aceasta este fantasma care \u00eei b\u00e2ntuie nop\u0163ile \u015fi zilele.<\/p>

Nicio \u00eendoial\u0103 \u00eens\u0103, anii trec, iar oamenii, privind o construc\u0163ie, uit\u0103 care Inginer a f\u0103cut-o, chiar dac\u0103 au \u015ftiut vreodat\u0103!\u2026 De foarte multe ori, doar vreun politician sau vreun finan\u0163ator \u00ee\u015fi pune numele pe construc\u0163ia sa.<\/p>

Cu satisfac\u0163ii pe care pu\u0163ine profesii le pot cunoa\u015fte, inginerul se uita \u00eenapoi cu bucurie la fluxul nesf\u00e2r\u015fit de bun\u0103tate \u015fi binefacere care decurge din succesele sale. Iar respectul \u015fi recunoa\u015fterea colegilor s\u0103i profesioni\u015fti reprezint\u0103 tot ceea ce \u00ee\u015fi dore\u015fte\u2026\u201d<\/p>
