The high school soon closed due to the occupation of Serbia by the armies of the Central Powers. In mid war he heads towards Bucharest. With great effort he reaches Giurgiu and then Bucharest, where he continues to study at the \u201cGh.Laz\u0103r\u201d high school and then at the military high school \u00a0\u201cDealu Monastery\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">In <strong>1919<\/strong>\u00a0he is admitted at the Polytechnical School, getting a diploma of electro-mechanical engineer. Later he studies at the Sorbone, in Paris<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<strong>(1924<\/strong>), for his graduate degree and PhD in Science (Physics and Mathematics). Until 1928 he works at the Aerotechnical Institute of Saint-Cyr, where he authors many papers and books. A remarkable book is the fundamental book on aerodynamics dedicated to the airfoil theory. Some of these airfoils have entered the scientific community under the name of \u201c<strong>Carafoli Airfoils<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">At the Aerotechnical Institute, together with its Director, Professor Albert Toussaint, he creates the \u201dhydromechanical installation for viewing the movement specters around aviation bodies\u201d known as the \u201c<strong>Toussaint-Carafoli Hydrodynamic Tank<\/strong>\u201d. In the same time, he is assigned at the Chair of Mechanics at Sorbone, led by the well known professor\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">Paul Painl\u00e9v\u00e9, the future Prime Minister of France. Between 1926 and 1928, Carafoli published 8 papers at the Academy of Science of the French Institute in Paris. In the same time, he published 8 scientific articles and 4 comprehensive general studies, which establishes Carafoli&#8217;s international recognition\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">(Theory and plotting of airfoils, Influence of winglets over the aerodynamic characteristics of the lift surfaces, Airplane wing aerodynamics, Experimental Research on Monoplane Wings).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">In the year\u00a0<strong>1928\u00a0<\/strong>Carafoli gets his<strong> PhD<\/strong> in Physics at Sorbone with the thesis \u201c<em>Contributions to the lift theory in aerodynamics\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A remarkable contribution of Elie Carafoli in his paper \u201dConfrontation of modern aerodynamic theories with rational mechanics laws\u201d is the decisive argument regarding the physical significance of the resultants of the aerodynamic forces on an airfoil. He gave a rigorous interpretation to that matter, accepted by the scientific community, by the famous Theodor von Karman himself and by Professor Wytoshinsky, the one who had started the controversy, putting an end to this long debate.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>October 1928<\/strong> Carafoli establishes the Chair of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, within the Electromechanics section of the Polytechnical School of Bucharest. He will serve as the Head of this Chair for 45 years, progressing to the Aviation Section, and then (<strong>1971<\/strong>) the Aircraft Faculty, which currently is the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the University Politehnica of Bucharest. Thus, it is safe to state that Carafoli is the father of the Romanian school of aviation engineering. Over 50 generations of engineers were educated by the great scientist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1930<\/strong> &#8211; Together with the French engineer\u00a0<span lang=\"IT\">Lucien Virmaux, he designs the first Romanian airplane manufactured at the IAR-Bra\u0219ov plant, a low wing monoplane named CV-11 (Carafoli-Virmaux), an original and unusual concept at the time, but validated on a large scale later, in modern aviation. Today, low wing monoplanes dominate the market. He worked closely with other Romanian aviation companies: ICAR, SET.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">Together with eng. <a href=\"https:\/\/inginerie.aero\/index.php\/en\/2017\/05\/07\/ion-stroescu-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ion Stroescu<\/strong><\/a>, he creates in the courtyard of the Polytechnical School, the first wind tunnel in Romania (<strong>1931<\/strong>), and also the first installation of this type in South-East Europe, with remarkable quality and performance for that time. The wind tunnel built between 1928 and 1930 was officially inaugurated in 1931 by the King Carol the 2nd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">He has dedicated a great deal of effort to the scientific research, publishing 14 books, which represent a valuable contribution to the treasury of aviation sciences: <em>Airplane Wing Aerodynamics<\/em>\u00a0(Paris,1928), <em>Aerodynamics<\/em>\u00a0(1951) translated in German (Berlin,1954) and in Russian (Moscow,1955), <em>High Speeds Aerodynamics<\/em>\u00a0(1957) translated in Russian (Moscow,1958), <em>Experimental Studies over Monoplane Wings<\/em>, <em>Conical Movements in Supersonic Regime<\/em>, published in China (Beijing,1955), <em>Wing Theory in Supersonic Flight\u00a0<\/em>(Oxford,1969),<em>\u00a0Incompressible Fluid Dynamics<\/em>\u00a0(1981), <em>Compressible Fluid Dynamics<\/em>\u00a0(1983). He authored over 200 scientific papers as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">Up to 1941 he also served as technical advisor of the air transport company LARES &#8211; Liniile Aeriene Rom\u00e2ne Exploatate de Stat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In parallel with teaching and scientific research,\u00a0<span lang=\"IT\">Elie CARAFOLI served as chief engineer and later director of the IAR &#8211; Industria Aeronautic\u0103 Rom\u00e2n\u0103 plant in Bra\u0219ov, where he created, designed, built and tested IAR-CV 11, IAR-13, IAR-14, IAR-15 and IAR-16 airplanes with remarkable performances for the time, comparable with the most successful rivals worldwide. One of these types was ranked in the best 6 airplanes in Europe in a contest in Bucharest, 1931.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">In <strong>1948<\/strong>\u00a0he is appointed <strong>titular member of the Romanian Academy<\/strong> and head of applied mechanics section. In 1949 he is appointed director of the Institute of Steel, Metallurgy, and Applied Mechanics, turned after 2 years in the Institute of Applied Mechanics of the Romanian Academy. Carafoli, as director of the institute, gathers a valuable team of scientists in mechanical engineering. Later, the institute becomes the Institute of Fluid Mechanics, with a special bias to the aviation basic fields: aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, structure calculation etc. Due to his personality and example of total dedication to science, the institute was a veritable launching pad for valuable scientists, recognized all over the world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For his vast activity of research in aerodynamics and the great deal of scientific papers published both under the Romanian Academy and worldwide, Carafoli was rewarded with the\u00a0<span lang=\"IT\">\u201c<strong>Louis<\/strong> <strong>Breguet<\/strong>\u201d Prize (Paris,<strong>1927) <\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0\u201cSilver Medal\u201d(1928)<\/strong>\u00a0awarded at the Sorbone by the National Society for Encouraging Progress by E. Herriot, ex Prime Minister of France, the Diploma <strong>Paul Tissandier<\/strong>\u00a0awarded by the International Aviation Federation at the Los Angeles Congress (<strong>1956),<\/strong>\u00a0the Great Medal <strong>Gauss <\/strong>which is awarded once every year to the best scientist worldwide, selected by the Scientific Society Braunschweig &#8211; Germany for \u201cremarkable and road opening works\u201c, the \u201c<strong>Apollo 11<\/strong>\u201d Medal awarded by NASA in <strong>1970<\/strong>, the Diploma and the Medali\u00a0<strong>\u201cTsiolkovsky<\/strong>\u201d on 27 March\u00a0<strong>1981. <\/strong>In the country he was rewarded with the title\u00a0<strong>EMERITUS SCIENTIST of Romania<\/strong>, the <strong>State Prize 1st Class, The Work Order 1st Class, <\/strong>the<strong>\u00a0Scientific Merit 1st Order, The Star of the Republic, 2nd Class.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">In <strong>1960 <\/strong>Professor Carafoli was invited by the great scientist Theodor von Karman to take part among the first members of the International Academy of Astronautics, just established, which aimed at gathering personalities in various branches of science to promote astronautics. Since <strong>1961<\/strong>\u00a0he was the Head of the Astronautics Commission of the Romanian Academy. He was titular member of the International Academy of Astronautics, Vice President of the International Astronautics Federation <strong>(1965-1967<\/strong>) Executive President (<strong>1968-1969)<\/strong>\u00a0and Post President (<strong>1971-1973),<\/strong> included among the 35 honorary memebers of the Royal Society of Aeronautics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"IT\">Another aspect of his activity: pursuing to bring to light the Romanian aviation pioneers and technology, from Conrad Haas, Ioan Valahul to the famous world aviation pioneers Vuia, Vlaicu, Coand\u0103, Bothezat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As an internationally accomplished researcher and scientist, he was elected by many forums as member or president: Romanian Academy, National Commission for UNESCO, President of the Technical Section of the Romanian Academy, honorary member of the Royal Academy of Aeronautics of the UK, corresponding member of Science and Art Academy in Toulouse, foreign member of\u00a0<span lang=\"IT\">Braunschweigische Vissenschaftlische Gesellschaft &#8211; Germany, extraordinary member of \u201cInternationale Astronautische Gesselschaft Herman Oberth\u201d &#8211; Germany, member in the Executive Committee and the Executive Bureau of the International Council of Scientific Unions (I.C.S.U.), member of the New York Science Academy. Se remarc\u0103 lucrarea fundamental\u0103 de aerodinamic\u0103 dedicat\u0103 teoriei pofilelor aerodinamice-dintre care unele au fost denumite de cunoscu\u021bi autori \u201c<strong>profile Carafoli<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">La Institutul Aerotehnic, \u00eempreun\u0103 cu directorul acestuia profesorul Albert Toussaint, realizeaz\u0103 \u201cInstala\u021bia hidromecanic\u0103 pentru vizualizarea spectrelor de mi\u0219care \u00een jurul corpurilor de avia\u021bie\u201d denumit\u0103 \u201c<strong>cuva Toussaint-Carafoli<\/strong>\u201d. In acela\u015fi timp era ata\u0219at \u015fi la catedra de mecanic\u0103 de la Sorbona, unde \u0219eful catedrei era cunoscutul profesor Paul Painl\u00e9v\u00e9 devenit mai t\u00e2rziu prim-ministru al Fran\u021bei. In acela\u015fi timp a publicat \u00een Fran\u021ba alte 8 lucr\u0103ri \u0219tiin\u021bifice precum \u0219i 4 studii generale ample care l-au consacrat pe plan interna\u021bional (Teoria \u0219i trasarea pofilelor aerodinamice, Influen\u0163a aripioarelor asupra propriet\u0103\u021bilor aerodinamice ale suprafe\u021belor portante, Aerodinamica aripilor de avion, Cercet\u0103ri experimentale asupra aripilor monoplane).<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">Anul <strong>1928 <\/strong>- ob\u0163ine <strong>doctoratul<\/strong> \u00een \u0219tiin\u021be fizice la Sorbona cu teza intitulat\u0103 \u201c<em>Contribu\u021bii la teoria sustenta\u021biei \u00een aerodinamic\u0103<\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">Trebuie men\u021bionat \u0219i un fapt deosebit, care i-a adus consacrarea definitiv\u0103 printre speciali\u0219tii de mecanica fluidelor \u0219i aerodinamic\u0103: tran\u0219area, \u00eentr-un mod str\u0103lucit, \u00eentr-o lucrare intitulat\u0103 \u201c<em>Confruntarea teoriilor aerodinamice moderne cu legile mecanicii ra\u021bionale<\/em>\u201d. In disputa din acea vreme privind semnifica\u021bia fizic\u0103 a rezultantei for\u021belor pe un profil aerodinamic, interpretarea sa, perfect riguroas\u0103 a pus cap\u0103t discu\u021biilor, fiind acceptat\u0103 \u0219i recunoscut\u0103 ca atare de cunoscu\u021bi savan\u021bi ai epocii, \u00een primul r\u00e2nd de celebrul Theodor von Karman \u0219i chiar, \u00een cele din urm\u0103, de \u00eensu\u015fi autorul c\u0103r\u021bii care a generat controversa, profesorul Wytoshinsky.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">In <strong>octombrie 1928<\/strong> \u00eenfiin\u021beaz\u0103 catedra de Aerodinamic\u0103 \u0219i Mecanica fluidelor, \u00een cadrul sec\u021biei de Electromecanic\u0103 la \u0218coala Politehnic\u0103 din Bucure\u0219ti, al c\u0103rui titular r\u0103m\u00e2ne 45 de ani cre\u00e2nd apoi Sec\u021bia de Avia\u021bie devenit\u0103 apoi (in <strong>1971)<\/strong> Facultatea de Aeronave iar, \u00een prezent, Facultatea de Inginerie Aerospa\u021bial\u0103 a Universit\u0103\u021bii \u201cPolitehnica\u201d Bucure\u0219ti. Deci este p\u0103rintele \u0219colii rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti de ingineri de avia\u021bie, peste 50 de genera\u021bii de ingineri s-au format prin grija \u0219i \u00eendrumarea eminentului om de \u0219tiin\u021b\u0103.<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span lang=\"IT\">1930 <\/span><\/strong> <span lang=\"IT\">- \u00cempreun\u0103 cu inginerul francez Lucien Virmaux proiecteaz\u0103 primul avion rom\u00e2nesc fabricat de uzinele IAR-Bra\u0219ov, de tip CV-11 (Carafoli-Virmaux) un monoplan cu aripa joas\u0103, o concep\u021bie original\u0103, care pe parcursul anilor s-a generalizat \u00een avia\u021bia mondial\u0103 modern\u0103. A stabilit, de asemenea colabor\u0103ri cu principalele \u00eentreprinderi de avia\u021bie din tara: ICAR, SET.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">Realizeaz\u0103 \u00eempreun\u0103 cu ing. Ion Stroescu, \u00een curtea \u0218colii Politehnice din Bucure\u0219ti, prima suflerie aerodinamic\u0103 din \u021bar\u0103 (<strong>1931<\/strong>), prima instala\u021bie de acest gen din sud-estul Europei av\u00e2nd calit\u0103\u021bi \u0219i performan\u021be remarcabile pentru acea vreme. Tunelul aerodinamic realizat \u00een perioada 1928-1930 a fost inaugurat oficial \u00een 1931 \u00een prezen\u021ba Regelui Carol al II-lea.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">A desf\u0103\u0219urat o intens\u0103 activitate de cercetare \u0219tiin\u021bific\u0103 public\u00e2nd 14 c\u0103r\u021bi, reprezent\u00e2nd o valoroas\u0103 contribu\u021bie la tezaurul \u0219tiin\u021belor \u00een domeniul avia\u021biei: <em>Aerodinamica aripilor de avion<\/em> (Paris,1928), <em>Aerodinamica<\/em> (1951) tradus\u0103 \u00een limba german\u0103 (Berlin,1954) \u015fi \u00een limba rus\u0103 (Moscova,1955), <em>Aerodinamica vitezelor mari<\/em> (1957) tradus\u0103 \u00een limba rus\u0103 (Moscova,1958), <em>Studii experimentale asupra aripilor monoplane<\/em>, <em>Mi\u0219c\u0103ri conice \u00een regim supersonic<\/em>, ap\u0103rut\u0103 \u00een China (Beijing,1955), <em>Teoria aripii \u00een zborul supersonic<\/em> (Oxford,1969),<em> Dinamica fluidelor incompresibile<\/em> (1981), <em>Dinamica fluidelor compresibile<\/em> (1983). A realizat, de asemenea, peste 200 de comunic\u0103ri \u0219tiin\u021bifice.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">P\u00e2n\u0103 \u00een 1941 a \u00eendeplinit func\u021bia de consilier tehnic al Companiei de transport aerian LARES - Liniile Aeriene Rom\u00e2ne Exploatate de Stat.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">In paralel cu activitatea didactic\u0103 \u0219i de cercetare \u0219tiin\u021bific\u0103, Elie CARAFOLI a \u00eendeplinit \u0219i func\u021bia de inginer \u0219ef \u0219i, apoi, de director la fabrica de avioane IAR-Industria Aeronautic\u0103 Rom\u00e2n\u0103 din Bra\u0219ov unde a conceput, proiectat, construit \u0219i \u00eencercat avioanele de tip IAR-CV 11, IAR-13, IAR-14, IAR-15 \u0219i IAR-16 cu performan\u021be remarcabile pentru acea vreme \u0219i comparabile cu cele mai bune realiz\u0103ri pe plan mondial. Unul din aceste avioane a fost considerat ca f\u0103c\u00e2nd parte dintre cele mai bune \u0219ase avioane din Europa la un concurs care a avut loc \u00een Bucure\u0219ti, \u00een 1931.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">Anul <strong>1948 <\/strong>- este numit <strong>membru titular al Academiei Rom\u00e2ne <\/strong>\u0219i \u0219eful sec\u021biei de Mecanic\u0103 aplicat\u0103. Este numit (1949) \u00een func\u021bia de director al Institutului de Siderurgie, Metalurgie \u0219i Mecanic\u0103 Aplicat\u0103 devenit dup\u0103 doi ani Institutul de Mecanic\u0103 Aplicat\u0103 al Academiei Rom\u00e2ne, al c\u0103rui prim director este instalat \u0219i str\u00e2ng\u00e2nd \u00een jurul s\u0103u cercet\u0103tori valoro\u0219i \u00een domeniul ingineriei mecanice. Ulterior institutul a devenit Institutul de Mecanica Fluidelor \u00een care o aten\u0163ie special\u0103 s-a acordat domeniilor de baz\u0103 ale avia\u021biei: aerodinamica \u0219i mecanica fluidelor, dinamica zborului, calculul structurilor, etc. Datorit\u0103 personalit\u0103\u021bii profesorului Elie Carafoli, prin abilitatea sa de a atrage cei mai talenta\u021bi tineri, prin exemplul s\u0103u de d\u0103ruire total\u0103 \u00een folosul \u0219tiin\u021bei, institutul a devenit o adev\u0103rat\u0103 pepinier\u0103 de cercet\u0103tori valoro\u0219i, dar \u0219i o \u0219coal\u0103 de cercetare cunoscut\u0103 \u00een \u00eentreaga lume. <\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">Pentru vasta activitate de cercetare \u00een domeniul aerodinamicii \u0219i marele volum de lucr\u0103ri \u0219tiin\u021bifice realizate at\u00e2t \u00een cadrul Academiei c\u00e2t \u0219i peste hotare, a fost distins cu Premiul \u201c<strong>Louis<\/strong> <strong>Breguet<\/strong>\u201d (Paris,<strong>1927) <\/strong>\u0219i<strong> \u201cMedalia de argint\u201d(1928)<\/strong> decernat\u0103 la Sorbona de Societatea na\u021bional\u0103 de \u00eencurajare a progresului de c\u0103tre E. Herriot fost prim-ministru al Fran\u0163ei, Diploma <strong>Paul Tissandier<\/strong> decernat\u0103 de Federa\u021bia Aeronautic\u0103 Interna\u021bional\u0103 la Congresul de la Los Angeles (<strong>1956),<\/strong> Marea Medalie <strong>Gauss <\/strong>care se acord\u0103 o singur\u0103 dat\u0103 pe an unui savant ales din \u00eentreaga lume de c\u0103tre Societatea \u0218tiin\u021bific\u0103 Braunschweg-Germania pentru \u201clucr\u0103ri proeminente \u0219i deschiz\u0103toare de drumuri\u201c, Medalia \u201c<strong>Apollo 11<\/strong>\u201d decernat\u0103 de NASA \u00een <strong>1970<\/strong>, Diploma \u0219i Medalia <strong>\u201cTiolkovschi<\/strong>\u201d la 27 martie <strong>1981. <\/strong>In \u021bar\u0103 a primit titlul de <strong>OM DE \u015eTIIN\u0162\u0102 EMERIT al RSR<\/strong>, abord\u00e2ndu-i-se <strong>Premiul de Stat clasa I, Ordinul Muncii clasa I, Ordinul Meritul \u0218tiin\u021bific clasa I, Steaua Republicii clasa a II-a.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"IT\">In anul <strong>1960 <\/strong> profesorul Carafoli a fost invitat personal de c\u0103tre marele savant Theodor von Karman de a face parte dintre primii membri ai Academiei Interna\u0163ionale de Astronautic\u0103, recent \u00eenfiin\u0163at\u0103, care avea ca scop, pe l\u00e2ng\u0103 consacrarea \u015ftiin\u0163ific\u0103, reunirea personalit\u0103\u0163ilor din diverse ramuri ale \u015ftiin\u0163ei, \u00een scopul promov\u0103rii ideilor astronauticii. Din <strong>1961<\/strong> i s-a \u00eencredin\u0163at conducerea Comisiei de Astronautic\u0103 a Academiei.
