In 1981, 10 founders including Phillipe Forestier establish Dassault Syst\u00e8mes, a Dassault Aviation spin-off focused on CATIA. When we think software and computers, the United States seem to exclusively dominate the scene. First come to mind names are of the American visionaries, Bill Gates, Steven Jobs, or more recently Sergey Brin and Larry Page. First company brands coming to mind are all American: IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Google, Adobe. However, Dassault Syst\u00e8mes built its own global dominance for the engineering software, and the first surprise came in the 1990s, when Boeing adopted CATIA and started to use it for aircraft projects, Boeing 747-400 and the Boeing 777 family. Not many remember today that Boeing 777 was the first airplane for which a physical mock-up was not made. Being completely designed in CATIA, all components were virtually created and assembled, a technology known today as Digital Mock-Up (DMU). The American competitors obviously came with many alternative solutions, flooding the market with competitive software. Even Boeing tried for a while to get away from the European product, using an American substitute. However, Boeing came back decisively and now is again one of the strategic customers of Dassault Syst\u00e8mes.<\/p>\n

Using CATIA extended form the aeronautical industry to other vehicle constructions industries, ships, cars, trains. More than technical innovation, the CATIA product bears in its DNA this gene of the victory over the supreme complexity of the aerospace industry, but we believe also in the gene of the responsibility of the aerospace engineer over his product. Contrasting with the spirit of liberty in the software engineering culture, when engineers launch imperfect products at the shelter of disclaimers and promises for updates, aerospace engineers work under pressure of enormous responsibility. Their product must be impecable, supertested from the beginning, otherwise pilots or passengers pay with their own life. What we see now with Boeing 737MAX is somehow a nightmare of a possible contamination of aerospace engineering by this libertarian culture of software engineering, which still lives in a romantic age. It is more important for them to be quickly on the market with an imperfect product, which will be patched afterwards. In the majority of software industries, such as gaming, the speed-reliability trade-off is resolved in favour of the speed to launch new products. In the 1980s there were some visionaries who went against the stream, who stubbornly fought to deliver only software tested and corrected close to perfection. In 1982 Donald Knuth launched his TeX typesetting software, which is still used to this day by major technical and scientific publishers. Very few minor modifications have been necessary since 1982 until today. The product was very well thought from the beginning by someone who confronted very complex problems in that type of activity. Exactly like CATIA. How many artificial systems are more complex in this world than a supersonic fighter? However, today Knuth\u2019s perfectionist and responsibility oriented philosophy does not inspire any more the mass of the software writers. With the exception of the Safety Critical Systems area, including the aerospace engineering, the rest of the software domains seem to enjoy liability protection of disclaimers, while surfing the waves of software updates. That is why we believe that Dassault Syst\u00e8mes are making the difference on the software market, and that is why we trust their new 3DEXPERIENCE product will revolutionize the engineering as we know it.<\/p>\n
What is 3DEXPERIENCE, how is it different from CATIA? Phillipe Forestier presented a powerful vision, which took control of our imagination, I must admit. 3DEXPERIENCE will enable virtualizing the real world, full stop. It includes a version of CATIA for virtualization of the artificial world, but goes far beyond and can virtualize the environment, the living world, the whole real world. 3DEXPERIENCE is a parallel universe where we can create, test or measure things or interactions that do not exist in reality (yet). It is a level of supreme simulation of the real world. In a way, it could be considered the supreme video game, but the usefulness of such a tool in every domain of knowledge is fantastic. Aerospace Engineering would benefit from an environment to test in detail bold solutions, without any risk. The most complex problems that we have, those for which we do not have mathematical or algorithmic models, are essentially solved by trial-and-error<\/em>. 3DEXPERIENCE could cancel the risks of the trial<\/em> stage, which took up to now many lives of aviation pioneers, astronauts and test pilots. That is why I am convinced that 3DEXPERIENCE will prove itself as a game changer<\/em> of engineering, but of many other fields too.<\/p>\n On the occasion of the outstanding event at the Embassy of France in Bucharest, HE Ms. Ambassador Mich\u00e8le Ramis invited also the students team of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the University Politehnica of Bucharest who got the Dassault Aviation Prize<\/a> awarded in 2019 at Le Bourget at the Student Aerospace Challenge competition. The supervisor of the team, Prof. Sterian D\u0103n\u0103il\u0103 and students Ionu\u021b Bunescu and Andra Man\u021bighian addressed the distinguished audience. Andra underlined that the UPB-FAE team was the only one who designed their suborbital vehicle using Dassault Syst\u00e8mes CATIA, which gave them a comptitive advantage over the other teams, many coming from renowned universities. Our students fully benefited from the CATIA Lab<\/a> in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, est. 2018 with the support of the ALTEN GECI company, from the partership with GKN Fokker Engineering Romania<\/a>, which resulted in Fokker Academy in 2017, of the internship offerred to the students by these two important aircraft structural design companies, but also ASSYSTEM, Airbus Helicopters, AKKA Technologies and many others.<\/p>\n The team of UPB-FAE students who won the Dassault Aviation 2019 Prize and their supervisor Professor Sterian D\u0103n\u0103il\u0103<\/p>\n We do hope that our students will be part of this new French Revolution, called 3DEXPERIENCE. Ceea ce pu\u021bini mai \u0219tiu ast\u0103zi este c\u0103 Boeing 777 a fost primul avion la care nu s-a realizat un mock-up fizic. Fiind proiectat integral \u00een CATIA, toate componentele au fost create virtual \u0219i asamblate virtual, o tehnologie care ast\u0103zi se nume\u0219te Digital Mock-Up (DMU). Concuren\u021bii americani ai Dassault Syst\u00e8mes au venit desigur cu multe solu\u021bii, inund\u00e2nd pia\u021ba cu multe variante de software concurent. Chiar Boeing a \u00eencercat o perioad\u0103 s\u0103 se lipseasc\u0103 de produsul european \u0219i s\u0103-l substituie cu unul american. Totu\u0219i, Boeing a revenit \u00een for\u021b\u0103 \u0219i acum este din nou unul dintre clien\u021bii strategici ai Dassault Syst\u00e8mes.<\/p> Dassault Falcon 50 in CATIA<\/p> Utilizarea soft-ului CATIA s-a extins de la industria aeronautic\u0103 la celelalte industrii constructoare de ma\u0219ini, nave, automobile, trenuri. Dincolo de ingeniozitatea tehnic\u0103, produsul CATIA are \u00een ADN-ul s\u0103u aceast\u0103 gen\u0103 a victoriei asupra supremei complexit\u0103\u021bi a ingineriei aerospa\u021biale, dar noi credem c\u0103 \u0219i gena responsabilit\u0103\u021bii inginerului aerospa\u021bial fa\u021b\u0103 de produsul proiectat de el. \u00cen contrast cu spiritul de libertate cultivat de inginerii de software, care lanseaz\u0103 produse imperfecte la ad\u0103postul unor disclaimer-e \u0219i al promisiunii unor update-uri, inginerii aerospa\u021biali lucreaz\u0103 sub presiunea unor resposabilit\u0103\u021bi enorme. Produsul lor trebuie s\u0103 fie impecabil, supertestat de la bun \u00eenceput, altfel pilo\u021bii sau pasagerii pl\u0103tesc cu via\u021ba lor. Ceea ce se \u00eent\u00e2mpl\u0103 acum cu Boeing 737MAX este cumva un vis ur\u00e2t, de posibil\u0103 contaminare a ingineriei aerospa\u021biale cu aceast\u0103 cultur\u0103 libertin\u0103, a ingineriei software, care tr\u0103ie\u0219te \u00eenc\u0103 o epoc\u0103 romantic\u0103, \u00een care e mai important s\u0103 fii primul pe pia\u021b\u0103 cu un produs imperfect, pe care s\u0103-l petice\u0219ti pe urm\u0103. \u00a0\u00cen majoritatea industriilor bazate pe software, cum ar fi gaming, modelul de business func\u021bioneaz\u0103 cu acest compromis vitez\u0103-fiabilitate rezolvat \u00een favoarea vitezei de lansare a unor produse. Totu\u0219i, ast\u0103zi filosofia perfec\u021bionist\u0103 \u0219i de responsabilitate a lui Knuth nu mai inspir\u0103 marea mas\u0103 a celor care scriu software. Cu excep\u021bia zonei Safety-Critical Systems, din care face parte \u0219i ingineria aerospa\u021bial\u0103, celelalte domenii ale software-ului par s\u0103 se simt\u0103 bine la ad\u0103postul disclaimere-lor \u0219i s\u0103 surfeze bine pe valurile de update-uri. De aceea credem noi c\u0103 Dassault Syst\u00e8mes face diferen\u021ba pe pia\u021ba de software, \u0219i de aceea credem c\u0103 noul lor produs 3DEXPERIENCE va revolu\u021biona toat\u0103 ingineria.<\/p> Ce este 3DEXPERIENCE, cu ce se deosebe\u0219te de CATIA? Phillipe Forestier ne-a prezentat o viziune de mare for\u021b\u0103 \u0219i trebuie s\u0103 recunosc c\u0103 ne-a subjugat imagina\u021bia. 3DEXPERIENCE va putea virtualiza lumea real\u0103, punct. El include o versiune de CATIA pentru virtualizarea lumii artificiale, dar merge mult mai departe de at\u00e2t \u0219i poate virtualiza mediul \u00eenconjur\u0103tor, via\u021ba, \u00eentreaga lume real\u0103. 3DEXPERIENCE este un univers paralel \u00een care putem crea, testa sau m\u0103sura lucruri sau interac\u021biuni care nu exist\u0103 \u00een realitate (\u00eenc\u0103). Este un nivel de simulare suprem\u0103 a lumii reale. \u00centr-un fel, ar putea fi considerat jocul video suprem, dar utilitatea unui asemenea instrument \u00een absolut oricare domeniu al cunoa\u0219terii este fantastic\u0103. Ingineria aerospa\u021bial\u0103 ar beneficia de un mediu de a testa \u00een detaliu solu\u021bii \u00eendr\u0103zne\u021be f\u0103r\u0103 niciun risc. Cele mai complexe probleme cu care ne confrunt\u0103m, cele pentru care \u00eenc\u0103 nu avem o modelare matematic\u0103 sau algoritmic\u0103, se rezolv\u0103 \u00een esen\u021b\u0103 cu metoda trial-and-error<\/em>. 3DEXPERIENCE ar putea anula riscurile etapei de trial<\/em>, care au costat p\u00e2n\u0103 acum vie\u021bile multor pionieri ai avia\u021biei, astronau\u021bi \u0219i pilo\u021bi de \u00eencercare.
