On 11 November 2016 in the Senate Room of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, the legendary President of\u00a0Air Canada<\/a>, C\u0103lin Rovinescu<\/strong>\u00a0was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Rector of UPB, Mihnea Costoiu, in presence of His Excellency, Kevin Hamilton, the ambassador of Canada in Bucharest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you! Ladies and gentlemen, it is a pleasure to be here today. It is a moment of pride, and in the same time very emotional for me \u00a0\u2013 receiving the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. As you see, my Romanian is rusty. As you learned from the presentation made by the Rector, I left Romania when I was 5 years old, together with my family. Before coming here, I had the opportunity to read some interesting facts about the history of almost 200 years of this university. It is a privilege for me to be invited to join the family of the University Politehnica of Bucharest. My latest university diploma (except this of today) dates from 1980. So much has been changed since then and until now… In 1980, the Internet and the mobile phones were of limited use. The same for personal computers. In 1980, digital meant to use your fingers to press the buttons of a cassette player to listen to music. Since then, we had the privilege to see before our eyes how the world has evolved and radically transformed. Especially in the technology level. We live now in a world where the things that we love are everywhere, changes and innovations being for many of us, the favorite weapons.<\/p>\n

Let us look at the aeronautical industry and the astronautical one. Think for a moment how many things have changed with that 12 seconds long flight of the Wright brothers. Today, aviation is faster, safer, less noisy, more environment friendly, and from many perspectives, digital. Boeing challenges Airbus, Airbus challenges Boeing. Bombardier challenges Embraer and the Chinese have just joined the party. The low cost operators made the legacy carriers (such as Air Canada, British Airways, Lufthansa or Air France) to be more agile, more innovative. Starting with that 12 seconds flight, the airplanes are now flying non-stop for 14,5 hours, even longer, to any remote place in the world, using the busy route network worldwide.<\/p>\n

Now, aviation is more competitive than ever before and it should stay that way! When it comes to global competition, you cannot place innovation in a legal framework, but you can inhibit it just by being average as education level. Let us admit openly: mediocrity is not enough any more these days in science, technology, design, business or universities. Even more so in a hypercompetitive field such as aviation, where risk taking and speed will play a greater role in defining success. The truth is that you need a great deal of change, of challenges and innovation to succeed in a globalized world. To succeed you need an innovative agenda, new stuff, not just repeating the same things that you have constantly done until now and hope for other results. From this perspective, I like the thoughts of Thomas Friedman, editorial at the New York Times and author of the book \u201dThe world is flat\u201d, who quoted President Obama with a declaration from November 2010: \u201cAnd we should be able to agree now that it makes no sense for China to have better rail systems than us, and Singapore having better airports than us.\u00a0 And we just learned that China now has the fastest supercomputer on Earth – that used to be us.\u00a0 They\u2019re making investments because they know those investments will pay off over the long term.\u201d We wonder how the Chinese manage to build railways and airports faster and better than us, while in some parts of North America and in Europe, infrastructure projects (bridges, roads) are debated for 5 or 10 years before deciding to build them or not. In a supercompetitive industry, we cannot go on like that.<\/p>\n

In business, avoiding mediocrity implies taking some risks: proposing innovative goods or services, even if we must operate outside our comfort zone. People are always afraid of risks. However, in order to progress, the risk, the risk of change, and even the risk of failure, are not only good, but I would say imperative. Avoiding mediocrity requires to adopt \u201dnext generation\u201d technology. Sometimes, it takes time to see results, but the best tech companies constantly operate in Beta to succeed in the global arena. Thanks to my job, I had the chance to travel in many emerging markets: Brasil, China, India, South Africa, Turkey, United Arab Emirates. All these interesting markets have 3 elements in common: speed, flexibility and the apprehension to take risks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMultumesc! Doamnelor si domnilor, este o placere sa fiu aici astazi. Este un moment de mandrie si, in acelasi timp, foarte emotionant pentru mine \u2013 primirea titlului Doctor Honoris Causa. Asa cum vedeti, romana mea este cam ruginita. Dupa cum ati aflat din prezentarea sustinuta de Rectorul UPB, am plecat din Romania pe cand aveam 5 ani impreuna cu familia mea. Inainte de a veni aici, am avut ocazia sa citesc cateva informatii interesante despre istoria de aproape 200 de ani a acestei Universitati. Este un privilegiu sa fiu invitat sa fac parte din familia Universitatii Politehnica Bucuresti. Ultima mea diploma universitara (exceptand momentul de astazi) dateaza din 1980. Atat de multe s-au schimbat de atunci si pana acum\u2026 In 1980, Internet-ul si telefoanele mobile aveau o arie limitata de raspandire. La fel si computerele personale. In 1980, digitalul insemna sa apesi cu degetul butoanele unui casetofon si sa asculti muzica. De-atunci si pana acum, am avut privilegiul sa vedem, inaintea ochilor nostri, cum lumea a evoluat si cum s-a transformat radical. Mai ales la nivelul tehnologiilor. Traim acum intr-o lume unde lucrurile care ne atrag sunt la totul pasul, schimbarea si inovatiile fiind, pentru multi dintre noi, \u201carmele\u201d preferate.<\/p>

Haideti sa privim putin industria aeronautica si cea spatiala. Ganditi-va pentru cateva clipe cate s-au schimbat de la acel zbor de 12 secunde al fratilor Wright! Astazi, aviatia este mai rapida, mai sigura, mai silentioasa, mai prietenoasa cu mediul inconjurator si, din multe puncte de vedere, digitala. Boeing provoaca Airbus, Airbus provoaca Boeing, Bombardier provoaca Embraer si chinezii de-abia intra in joc. Operatorii low-cost i-au facut pe cei legacy (cum sunt Air Canada, British Airways, Lufthansa sau Air France) sa fie mai ageri, mai inovatori. Plecand de la acel zbor de 12 secunde, acum avioanele zboara non-stop 14,5 ore, chiar si mai mult, spre orice colt al lumii folosind reteaua stufoasa de rute la nivel mondial.<\/p>

Acum, aviatia este mai competitiva ca oricand si trebuie sa ramana asa! Cand vine vorba despre competitivitate la nivel global, nu poti aseza inovatia intr-un cadru legal, insa o poti inhiba fiind doar \u201cmediu\u201d ca nivel de pregatire. Sa recunoastem deschis: mediocritatea nu mai este suficienta in zilele noastre in stiinta, tehnologie, proiectare, in afaceri sau in universitati. In nici un caz intr-un domeniu hipercompetitiv cum e aviatia, unde asumarea riscurilor si viteza vor juca un rol mai important in definirea succesului. Realitatea este ca ai nevoie de o doza mare de schimbare, de provocari si inovatie pentru a reusi intr-o lume globalizata. Pentru a avea succes ai nevoie de o agenda inovatoare, de chestii noi, nu doar sa repeti aceleasi lucruri pe care le-ai facut in mod constant pana acum si sa speri la alte rezultate. Din acest punct de vedere imi place cum gandeste Thomas Friedman, editorialist la The New York Times si autorul cartii \u201cThe world is flat\u201d, care il cita pe Presedintele Obama cu o declaratie din noiembrie 2010: \u201cNu vad de ce China are cai ferate mai bune decat noi si Singapore aeroporturi mai bune. Am aflat ca cel mai rapid supercomputer din lume se afla in China. Noi obisnuiam sa fim cei care se lauda cu asta.\u201d Ne intrebam, asadar, cum pot chinezii sa contruiasca trenuri si aeroporturi mai repede si mai bine decat noi, in timp ce in anumite parti din America de Nord si in Europa proiecte de infrastructura (poduri, sosele) sunt dezbatute timp de 5 sau 10 ani inainte de a decide daca le construim sau nu. Intr-o industrie supercompetitiva, nu mai putem continua asa.<\/p>

In afaceri, evitarea mediocritatii implica asumarea unor riscuri. Aducerea unor produse si servicii inovatoare chiar daca trebuie sa operam in afara zonei noastre de confort. Oamenii se tem mereu de risc. Insa pentru a progresa, riscul, riscul schimbarii si chiar riscul de a esua nu sunt doar bune ci, as putea spune, imperative. Evitarea mediocritatii presupune adoptarea tehnologiei \u201cnext generation\u201d. Uneori, e nevoie de timp pentru a vedea rezultatele. Insa cele mai bune companii tech opereaza constant in Beta pentru a reusi in arena globala. Gratie job-ului meu, am avut sansa sa calatoresc in numeroase piete emergente: Brazilia, China, India, Africa de Sud, Turcia, Emiratele Arabe Unite. Toate aceste piete interesante au 3 elemente in comun: viteaza, flexibilitatea si disponibilitatea de a-si asuma riscuri.\u201d<\/p>
