The 2017 Richey Medal of the Royal Institute of Navigation<\/a> was awarded to a team of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The medal is awarded annually for the best scientific paper published in the previous year in the Journal of Navigation, Cambridge University Press, on the basis of the vote of the researchers and specialists of the field. The Romanian team consists of Octavian Thor Pleter, Cristian Emil Constantinescu and Barna Istv\u00e1n Jakab.<\/p>\n

His Royal Highness Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh awarded the distinction in the General Assembly of the Royal Institute of Navigation, held at the Royal Geographical Society, London, on 18 July 2017. It is a recognition of the Romanian aerospace engineering school. It was an emotional moment, and the fact that HRH will retire from public life made it even more so.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/div>\n

Octavian Thor Pleter, who leads the team who wrote the article \u201dReconstructing the Malaysian 370 Flight Trajectory by Optimal Search\u201d<\/a>, had the following comment:<\/p>\n

\u201dMH370 is perhaps the greatest mystery of our time. The Royal Institute of Navigation and the Journal of Navigation led the engagement of scientists into this sensitive and challenging subject. The Chris Ashton team\u2019s paper[1]<\/a>\u00a0(which got the Richey medal last year) was so creative, so brilliant, and so inspiring, probably one of the greatest and highest ranked scientific papers.<\/p>\n

Scientific research should leave the confort zone of abstraction and get engaged in socially relevant topics, such as this mystery. Michael Richey himself is an example of a courageous scientist, with a pragmatic approach, confronting reality, sometimes taking liability for research. This is the problem-solving kind of science that we follow.<\/p>\n

A real problem is like a hologram. It touches many disciplines, it contains in a small sample the whole complexity of the world. If we specialize too deeply, too narrowly, problem-solving science gets harder. That is why we try to keep learning various subjects, we foster our curiosity and we try to be multidisciplinary.<\/p>\n

We see this medal as a recognition of the scientific research at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania, where we belong.<\/p>\n

We are very grateful to the Journal of Navigation editor and peer reviewers of our paper, to the Royal Institute of Navigation for this reward.<\/p>\n

We worked for one year and a half to make these calculations, and we trust they are right and indicate the area where the MH370 wreck will be found. We were surprised that the search was suspended before the area we calculated being fully covered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Este o recunoa\u0219tere a \u0219colii rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti de inginerie aerospa\u021bial\u0103. A fost un moment emo\u021bionant, iar faptul c\u0103 Alte\u021ba Sa Regal\u0103 se va retrage din via\u021ba public\u0103 l-a f\u0103cut \u0219i mai emo\u021bionant.<\/p>

Octavian Thor Pleter, liderul echipei de cercet\u0103tori rom\u00e2ni care au scris articolul \u201dReconstituirea traiectoriei zborului Malaysian 370 prin c\u0103utare optimal\u0103\u201d, a declarat urm\u0103toarele:<\/p>

\u201dMH370 este probabil cel mai mare mister al timpurilor noastre. Institutul Regal de Naviga\u021bie \u0219i Jurnalul de Naviga\u021bie (Cambridge University Press) au preluat conducerea angaj\u0103rii cercet\u0103torilor pe acest subiect sensibil \u0219i provocator. Lucrarea echipei lui Chris Ashton[1]<\/a>\u00a0(care a ob\u021binut medalia Richey anul precedent) este at\u00e2t de creativ\u0103, de sclipitoare \u0219i de inspira\u021bional\u0103, probabil una dintre cele mai reu\u0219ite \u0219i mai bine cotate lucr\u0103ri \u0219tiin\u021bifice.<\/p>

Cercetarea \u0219tiin\u021bific\u0103 ar trebui s\u0103 p\u0103r\u0103seasc\u0103 zona de confort a abstrac\u021biei \u0219i s\u0103 se angajeze mai mult \u00een probleme concrete, relevante social, cum ar fi acest mister. Michael Richey \u00eensu\u0219i este un exemplu de om de \u0219tiin\u021b\u0103 curajos, cu o abordare pragmatic\u0103, \u00een confruntare cu realitate, uneori asum\u00e2ndu-\u0219i riscuri pentru rezultatele cercet\u0103rii. Aceasta este tipul de \u0219tiin\u021b\u0103 orientat\u0103 c\u0103tre rezolvarea problemelor, pe drumul c\u0103reia ne-am aliniat \u0219i noi.<\/p>

O problem\u0103 real\u0103 este ca o hologram\u0103. Atinge multe discipline, con\u021bine \u00eentr-un e\u0219antion mic \u00eentreaga complexitate a lumii. Dac\u0103 ne specializ\u0103m prea ad\u00e2nc \u0219i prea \u00eengust, \u0219tiin\u021ba orientat\u0103 c\u0103tre rezolvarea problemelor devine mai dificil\u0103. De aceea continu\u0103m s\u0103 \u00eenv\u0103\u021b\u0103m diferite lucruri noi, ne cultiv\u0103m curiozitatea \u0219i \u00eencerc\u0103m s\u0103 r\u0103m\u00e2nem multidisciplinari.<\/p>

Vedem aceast\u0103 medalie ca o recunoa\u0219tere a cercet\u0103rii \u0219tiin\u021bifice de la Facultatea de Inginerie Aerospa\u021bial\u0103 a Universit\u0103\u021bii Politehnica din Bucure\u0219ti, c\u0103reia \u00eei apar\u021binem.<\/p>

Suntem foarte recunosc\u0103tori editorului Jurnalului de Naviga\u021bie \u0219i recenzorilor lucr\u0103rii noastre, precum \u0219i Institutului Regal de Naviga\u021bie al Marii Britanii pentru aceast\u0103 distinc\u021bie.<\/p>

Am muncit un an \u0219i jum\u0103tate pentru a face calculele din lucrare \u0219i credem c\u0103 ele sunt corecte \u0219i indic\u0103 locul unde va fi g\u0103sit\u0103 epava avionului MH370. Am fost surprin\u0219i c\u0103 s-au sistat c\u0103ut\u0103rile \u00eenainte ca zona indicat\u0103 de noi s\u0103 fie complet acoperit\u0103.\u201d<\/p>
