On 18 November 2017 in the Acad. Virgiliu Constantinescu amphitheater, professors and students of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering met Eng. Pilot Gabriel Iancic, President of the IAR AMERICAN organization and Eng. Sorin Ploscaru, aircraft designer. IAR AMERICAN presented an ambitious project, highly significant for the Romanian aviation: redesigning and manufacturing of a IAR-80 aircraft to fly again. This aircraft represents the peak of the Romanian aeronautical industry in its peak era, before and during WWII. In the same time, the IAR-80 fighter plane is representative for the numerous air victories won by the Romanian Royal Air Force in the war during 1941-1944 against Russian (Soviet) airplanes in the Barbarossa Operation, against American bombers and fighters in the Tidal Wave Operation, and against the German Luftwaffe, defending the country after the Royal Coup of 23 August 1944.<\/p>\n

Gabriel Iancic is alumnus 1997 of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, specialization On Board Equipment and Installations. He lives in Canada since 2000 and is a frequent presence at the North American air shows, flying a number of sports aircraft, experimental, historic, both replicas and original aircraft. He is passionate of both flying and the technical side. Even since he was still in Romania, he repaired and released for flight a Zlin Z-726 which had been damaged in an accident. This continued to fly within the Romanian Airclub, based at the Pite\u0219ti Geam\u0103na Aerodrome. During a visit to Romania, Gabriel Iancic met a number of experts in aviation history, engineers, technicians from the old generations, who were at IAR Bra\u0219ov in the pre-WWII era, with pilots of the Romanian Royal Air Force who have actually flown the IAR-80. The photo taken in November 2017 shows Air Brigade General (Ret) Pilot\u00a0Ion Dobran<\/b><\/a>, air Ace with 10 war victories, together with Eng. Gabriel Iancic. The air hero who won respect equally from Russian, American, and German pilots approaches his Centenary Anniversary. The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering wishes him good health and strength to continue to inspire our young for high performance aviation.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, from the 460 IAR-80\/81 units manufactured in 1940-1944, not a single one survived destruction. The replicas exposed at the Aviation Museum and Military Museum in Bucharest have a rather symbolic and artistic value, lacking technical accuracy. Otherwise, most plans, drawings and original manufacturing documentation were lost. There is a possibility that an IAR-80 unit still exists, sunk in the Black Sea, in the Odessa region, but such a search and recovery operation could be extremely expensive.<\/p>\n

The IAR-80\/81 plane was designed by Prof. Dr. Eng. Ion Grosu, who was equally a graduate and a professor of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The weaponry and manufacturing were done unde the command of\u00a0 Eng. Mircea Grossu-Viziru<\/a>. The engine was designed and manufactured by\u00a0Eng. Teodor G\u00e2rne\u021b<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The IAR AMERICAN organization took the road of recovering as many original drawings as possible, manufacturing documentation, and targets the design of a new IAR-80, as close as possible to the original, but using current design technology and modern materials. Here, the students of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering are expected to help. The young people showed their interest and understood the challenge. The students were encouraged by the the presence of professors Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Octavian Thor Pleter, Lect. Dr. Eng. Grigore Cican,\u00a0 Lect. Dr. Eng. Mihai Barbelian, and Assoc. Assistant Eng. Arnau Cubillo.<\/p>\n

Finally, the participants visited the Piston Engine Laboratory of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, where one of the few original IAR-80 engines, the 14-cylinder Double Star K14-IV C32 of 920 HP is maintained.<\/p>\n

Sorin Ploscaru, proiectant. IAR AMERICAN au prezentat un proiect ambi\u021bios \u0219i de mare \u00eensemn\u0103tate pentru avia\u021bia rom\u00e2n\u0103: reproiectarea \u0219i construc\u021bia unei aeronave IAR-80 care s\u0103 zboare. Aceast\u0103 aeronav\u0103 reprezint\u0103 etalonul industriei rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti de construc\u021bii aeronautice \u00een perioada ei maxim\u0103 dezvoltare, \u00eenainte \u0219i \u00een timpul celui de-al Doilea R\u0103zboi Mondial. Totodat\u0103, aeronava IAR-80 este reprezentativ\u0103 \u0219i pentru numeroase victorii aeriene repurtate \u00een r\u0103zboi de a\u0219ii aerului din For\u021bele Aeriene Regale ale Rom\u00e2niei \u00een perioada 1941-1944 at\u00e2t \u00eempotriva avioanelor de v\u00e2n\u0103toare ruse\u0219ti (sovietice) \u00een opera\u021biunea Barbarossa, \u00eempotriva bombardierelor \u0219i avioanelor de v\u00e2n\u0103toare amerciane \u00een opera\u021biunea Tidal Wave, c\u00e2t \u0219i \u00eempotriva avioanelor militare germane, ap\u0103r\u00e2nd \u021bara dup\u0103 Insurec\u021bia de la 23 August 1944.<\/p>

Gabriel Iancic este absolvent 1997 al Facult\u0103\u021bii de Inginerie Aerospa\u021bial\u0103, specializarea Echipamente \u0219i Instala\u021bii de Bord. El locuie\u0219te \u00een Canada din 2000 \u0219i frecventeaz\u0103 show-urile aeriene din America de Nord, zbur\u00e2nd multe tipuri de avioane sportive, experimentale, istorice, at\u00e2t replici c\u00e2t \u0219i aeronave originale. Este pasionat at\u00e2t de pilotaj, c\u00e2t \u0219i de partea tehnic\u0103. \u00cenc\u0103 de c\u00e2nd era \u00een Rom\u00e2nia, a reparat \u0219i repus la zbor un Zlin Z-726 care fusese avariat \u00eentr-un accident. Acesta a continuat s\u0103 zboare \u00een cadrul Aeroclubului Rom\u00e2niei, av\u00e2nd baza la Aerodromul Pite\u0219ti Geam\u0103na. Din p\u0103cate, din cele 460 de exemplare de IAR-80\/81 fabricate \u00een perioada 1940-1944, nici m\u0103car unul nu a supravie\u021buit distrugerii. Replicile expuse la Muzeul Avia\u021biei \u0219i la Muzeul Militar din Bucure\u0219ti au mai degrab\u0103 valoare simbolic\u0103 \u0219i artistic\u0103, neav\u00e2nd acurate\u021be tehnic\u0103. De altfel, s-au pierdut \u0219i o mare parte din planurile, desenele \u0219i documenta\u021bia original\u0103 de fabrica\u021bie. Arhiva fotografic\u0103 \u0219i de film s-au p\u0103strat mult mai bine. Exist\u0103 posibilitatea ca un IAR-80 s\u0103 mai existe scufundat \u00een Marea Neagr\u0103, \u00een regiunea Odesa, dar opera\u021biunea de c\u0103utare \u0219i recuperare ar fi una extrem de costisitoare.<\/p>

Avionul IAR-80 a fost proiectat de Prof. dr. ing. Ion Grosu, care a fost totodat\u0103 \u0219i absolvent \u0219i profesor al Facult\u0103\u021bii de Inginerie Aerospa\u021bial\u0103. Partea de armament \u0219i fabrica\u021bia avionului s-au realizat sub comanda ing. Mircea Grossu-Viziru<\/a>. Motorul a fost proiectat \u0219i realizat de ing. Teodor G\u00e2rne\u021b<\/a>.<\/p>

Organiza\u021bia IAR AMERICAN a pornit pe drumul recuper\u0103rii c\u00e2t mai multor desene originale, documenta\u021bii de fabrica\u021bie \u0219i \u00ee\u0219i propune proiectarea unui IAR-80 nou, c\u00e2t mai aproape de original, dar folosind tehnici de proiectare \u0219i materiale moderne. Aici, studen\u021bii Facult\u0103\u021bii de Inginerie Aerospa\u021bial\u0103 au fost chema\u021bi s\u0103 dea o m\u00e2n\u0103 de ajutor. Tinerii s-au ar\u0103tat interesa\u021bi \u0219i au \u00een\u021beles provocarea c\u0103reia trebuie s\u0103-i fac\u0103 fa\u021b\u0103. Studen\u021bii au fost \u00eencuraja\u021bi de profesorii prezen\u021bi: Conf. dr. ing. Octavian Thor Pleter, S.l. dr. ing. Grigore Cican \u0219i S.l. dr. ing. Mihai Barbelian.<\/p>
